A horse called Rio
Miss Rio is named after Rio, a much-loved horse. Born The Smull, after the Irish jockey Pat Smullen, he had racing in his blood before he became part of our family on a farm in Devon. In August 2025 we lost him, in an accident in which he gave his life trying to protect my granddaughter.
In the months that followed, Dartmoor became our healing place, and Miss Rio was born to keep Rio's memory alive. Every candle and diffuser is now made in small batches on our working farm in Devon, inspired by the moorland he loved.
Inspired by Dartmoor
Dartmoor isn't just a place, it's a feeling. The rolling hills, ancient tors, wild ponies and ever-changing skies inspire everything we create. Our fragrances are drawn from the moor, its woodland, its kitchen gardens and the warmth of coming home after a winter ride.
- Dartmoor Hearth brings cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and roasted coffee, softened by wild mint and creamy vanilla.
- Leather & Tack is the scent of the tack room, with saddle leather, sandalwood and amber.
- Dartmoor Balsam Forest is a reed diffuser with pine, cedarwood and eucalyptus.
How we make them
Every Miss Rio candle is hand-poured in small batches in Devon using premium soy wax and a cotton wick. Our products are vegan-friendly and cruelty-free, and made on a working farm run entirely by women.
